Pros and Cons
Powertrain
The VW Sharan has been around since 1995. Since 2010 it has been divided into two different generations. Here is an overview of the engines:.
VW Sharan 1
The first generation of VW Sharan was produced from 1995 to 2010 . The model started with an R4 petrol engine with 115 hp and a VR6 petrol engine with 174 hp . Later, the VR6 became the premium variant as a 2.8-liter V6 engine with 204 hp.
Up to 2010, the power of the R4 engine increased continuously. When the production of the first generation was discontinued, there were three petrol engines of this type with power ratings from 104 to 150 hp – five petrol engines in all.
The VW Sharan 1 was also available as a diesel variant with a 1.9 liter TDI engine with 90 hp . For a short time it was available with 150 hp. Later there were adjustments to a 115 hp engine. Towards the end of the first generation, VW built six variants of the 1.9 TDI in the power levels 90 to 150 hp . In 2005, the 2.0 TDI (140 hp) was an alternative with lower fuel consumption and BlueMotion technology.
VW Sharan 2
The second generation of the VW Sharan has been in production since 2010 and is scheduled to be discontinued in 2022. The new models will no longer have a diesel engine in Europe . Until the end of production, the Sharan 2 will only be available with the 1.4 TSI (150 hp) petrol engine .
If you really want a Sharan with a diesel engine, you can only find it in stock vehicles. These have one of the 8 variants of the four-cylinder 2.0 TDI diesel engine in the power levels 115 to 184 hp.
Otherwise there are four-cylinder petrol engines. You can choose between: 1.4 TSI with 150 hp and the 2.0 TSI with 200 hp or 220 hp (from 2015).
The standard VW Sharan comes with front-wheel drive . It is also optionally available with all-wheel drive. The 2.0 TDI with its 4Motion drive is particularly interesting. It automatically distributes the power between the axles and can transfer up to 60 percent of it from the front to the rear axle. The VW Sharan is available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed DSG .
The combined consumption of the 1.4 TSI (150 hp) is 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers with a total range of 1,029 kilometers. The trailer load is 1,800 kg with brakes and 750 kg without brakes.

Design
Exterior
The original design of the family van resulted from a cooperation between different car manufacturers. Accordingly, the VW Sharan combines various design elements right from the start.
A facelift went hand in hand with the market maturity of the second generation of the VW Sharan . The new generation has a timeless design . It combines the exterior of a typical van with the well-known VW design. Basically, the VW Sharan looks like a VW Golf – just bigger . The simple design with the harmonious body is unobtrusive, which is why the special models of the Sharan want to stand out more. For example, they offer colorful paint finishes or spread a lounge flair in the interior.
The large window fronts are particularly attractive on the VW Sharan. They already show from the outside how much space there is in the vehicle. There is also a modern rear end with an innovative rear light signature based on LED technology. It quickly becomes clear: the VW Sharan looks classic and good, but scores particularly well with its inner values.
Interior
The VW Sharan scores above all with its interior. Even the standard equipment of the vehicle convinces with the combination of luxury and modernity . For example, the production model offers comfort sports seats, either a manual or an electric sliding door and a leather or multifunction steering wheel .
However, the highlight of the VW Sharan is and remains its individually adaptable interior. The innovative “Easy Fold” function allows the second bench seat and the front passenger seat to be folded down completely. This creates a loading area that is approx. two meters long .
Five or seven seats fit into the VW Sharan – depending on the variant. Depending on the model, the folding function creates a capacity of between 2,430 and 2,297 liters . That’s enough for the family and half the workshop.
In addition, the comfort of the VW Sharan can still be increased by optional equipment elements such as B. increase the large panoramic roof or integrated child seats .
Security
The well-equipped basic model of the VW Sharan also includes good safety features. The vehicle offers various security elements so that the family is well protected during the journey, but also in an emergency.
Particular attention is paid to the safety of the passengers. The VW Sharan gets a whopping 96 percent and 80 percent of the points for adults and children respectively. The VW Sharan owes this excellent test result to its structure and design. Its highly stable mix of materials in the driver’s area has a significant impact on its crash safety. In this way, the occupants are optimally protected in the event of a front, rear or side impact .
The Sharan also performs very well when it comes to its safety support. Among other things, there is drowsiness detection, a blind spot sensor and traffic sign recognition as standard .
Alternatives
Just about every car manufacturer offers its own family van with its own advantages and disadvantages. Accordingly, there are many alternatives for the VW Sharan. The main competitors are Volkswagen Touran, Volvo XC90, Toyota Sienta, Mitsubishi Outlander and many more European and Japanese 7 seaters
